Planet Management
Planet Management is one of the easiest professions to get started in. It is also very lucrative depending on what you make. Robotics are more advanced, but are very valuable. Coolant is another easier, but valuable commodity.
The skills you'll need:
Planetology
Interplanetary Consolidation
Command Center Upgrades
Planetology is required to scan planets for the resources you want. Interplanetary Consolidation allows you to have multiple planet colonies. At level 5, you can have a total of six planets. While technically, you don't need any skills for the first command center, you won't know where to place it, and it won't be able to do much. Command Center Upgrades allows you to upgrade the colony so that it can process much more material, and hold more buildings.
Some people tell you to run the extractors into the industry facilities. this may have been the old way, but on the new Planetary Interaction system, there is a better way. You will lose a lot of materials if you just run everything straight into the industry facilities. The system I use causes me to store up my excess and use it later, this makes me extra money and also ensures my factories run as long as possible.

In the picture above you can see that everything runs into and out of a Launch Pad. To set up a launch pad, you need to have your command center upgraded to level 2. The launch pad allows you to interact with the customs office and export your goods from the planet, or import goods to the planet. To make the more advanced products, you will need to use multiple planets. This will be a requirement for those products. So start out this way. Also, running the extractors into the launch pad, which is the largest storage facility, all the stuff you are extracting, even if it isn't used right away, will be stored for later use. Then the industry facilities pull the material they need out of the launch pad and make a new product with it, they then dump their produced stuff back into the launch pad. The next industry facility will take those materials and make something new, then dump it back into the launch pad. this makes everything a lot easier to keep track of.
You can use multiple launch pads, but it really isn't necessary. It should be mentioned that there is a drop down menu on the left side of the customs office window that will let you choose which launch pad you want to import/export from/to. But for most people, this really isn't necessary.

Sometimes you will want to have a facility that is nothing more than a production ground. Maybe this is because you are working with materials you buy, or maybe you are using multiple characters to gather the materials from planets. Anyway, this is a good set up for that as well.
The basic idea is to have the routes the products move on to be as short as possible. Since routes use power, they can cut you short on extractors and facilities. Experiment a bit, but you should very quickly notice that this is about as good as it gets.
